Is EMDR Therapy Just for Trauma?

Winding path of grey pebbles topped with blue, turquoise, and white sea glass.

Let’s be honest, the first time you hear about EMDR therapy, it can sound a bit strange. All this talk of eye movements, tapping, or following lights… it’s not what most people picture when they think of counselling.

I’ve often heard people say, “I’m not sure that’s for me,” or, “My problems aren’t ‘big’ enough for something like that.” It’s a common worry, and it comes from the misunderstanding that EMDR is only for soldiers or survivors of major catastrophes.

But what if a part of your mind is simply stuck on a painful or distressing memory, and it’s affecting your life today? That’s where this approach can be surprisingly effective.

So, What Is EMDR Therapy, Really?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. That’s a mouthful, so let’s break it down. At its heart, it’s a structured therapy that helps the brain process memories that are causing you distress.

Think of a deeply upsetting memory like a file that has been saved incorrectly on a computer. Every time your brain tries to access it, the system glitches. You might get a flash of the image, a jolt of the same fear or shame, or a physical sensation. The memory feels like it’s happening *now*, not in the past.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (like the eye movements) to help the brain’s own information processing system get to work. It doesn’t erase the memory. Instead, it helps your brain file it away properly, as a past event. The memory is still there, but the emotional charge, the glitch, is gone.

It’s Not Just for ‘Big T’ Trauma

This is probably the biggest misconception we see. When people in Kent search for trauma therapy, they often think it doesn’t apply to them unless something catastrophic has happened.

But EMDR can also be incredibly helpful for anxiety, phobias, and low self-esteem. Persistent anxiety, for example, is often fuelled by past experiences that have left you feeling unsafe or humiliated. It could be a presentation that went badly, a harsh criticism from a parent, or a car accident. These events can get stuck, leaving your nervous system on high alert. If you feel like the past won’t stay in the past, this might be why.

A key point is that you don’t always have to talk through the event in exhaustive detail, which many people find relieving. The focus is on letting your brain process it internally.

What to Expect from a Session

Your therapist won’t dive straight in. We first spend time understanding what’s troubling you and give you tools to manage any difficult emotions that come up. You are always in control.

The goal is not to re-live the pain, but to let it go. People often describe feeling ‘lighter’ afterwards, or say that the memory finally feels distant. They can think about it without the gut-punch of emotion.

If you're feeling stuck and traditional talk therapy hasn't quite shifted things, EMDR could be an option to consider. It’s one of the tools we can use as part of your private therapy here in Kent.

If you're curious to learn more, the first step is a conversation. We offer therapy online or face-to-face across Kent, with sessions booked one at a time so there’s no long-term commitment. Our fee is £68 for a full hour session. Please get in touch by phone or email to book an appointment.
