Counselling or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
What’s the Difference?
Counselling is a talking therapy that allows you to talk about your problems and feelings in a safe, supportive, confidential environment. A counsellor is trained to listen with empathy (by putting themselves in your shoes) that can help you understand and deal with any negative thoughts and feelings you might have that have caused you to become ‘stuck’. Counselling isn’t about giving advice, it’s about helping you recognise that you have options and enabling you to decide which positive course of action you would like to take in order to bring about change and feel better.
You might find it difficult talking to friends or family if you have a problem but by talking to a trained professional you will be able to you look at your problems from a different, un-biased, balanced perspective. Our counsellors at CBT and Counselling Kent offer understanding, support and respect of your views. It can be a great relief to share your worries or fears with someone who acknowledges your feelings and is able to help you reach achieve your goal.
People seek counselling for a variety reason – from day-to-day worries to more traumatic distressing events such as the loss of a loved one, relationship issues, stress, work place bullying to long term psychological challenges like depression and anxiety, past trauma or problems with anger. No problem is too big or too small.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) also takes place in a safe, supportive, confidential environment and falls under the talking therapy umbrella, but it’s seen more as a mid to short-term therapy. A CBT therapist adopts the same skills as a counsellor in terms of empathy and understanding but their approach is more directive and solution focussed. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy recognises that it’s your past experiences which have shaped you, but it does not tend to dwell too long on that and instead works on helping you move you forward.
CBT is based on the idea that it’s not events in themselves that upset us, but the meanings we attach to these events. Problems can develop if you continue to hold on to the same thought and behaviour patterns while failing to see there might be an alternative explanation. The aim of CBT is to help you change negative thoughts and find alternative, more rational, ways of thinking about your situation. You will also usually be asked to undertake “homework” tasks between sessions to help address your problems in a practical way.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is not about “positive thinking” it is about thinking realistically, logically and rationally in situations that you might experience as distressing.
Common problems CBT can help with:
Anxiety. Depression. Anger Management. Low self-confidence/self-esteem. Panic Attacks. Phobias. Stress Management, Exam or test stress. Talking in Public. Social Phobia. Jealousy. Insomnia. Sexual and relationship problems.
Whether it is counselling or cognitive behavioural therapy; in most cases, it takes a number of sessions before the counselling starts to make a difference, and a regular commitment is required to make the best use of the therapy.
