# When Everything Looks Fine But Nothing Feels Right

September 3, 2026

![Man stands by a lake, autumn leaves on path, with a dandelion in foreground.](https://rxvhnvwmfwrneowddnji.supabase.co/storage/v1/render/image/public/blog-images/therapy-in-west-malling-hufer0.png?width=1200&resize=contain&quality=80)

Walking through West Malling on a sunny afternoon, past the Abbey or along the High Street, it’s easy to feel a pressure to reflect the peaceful surroundings. To look like you have it all figured out. But I’ve spoken to so many people who walk those same streets feeling a world away from that sense of calm.

On the outside, everything appears fine. You’re managing work, family, life. But inside, it’s a different story. A constant, low-level hum of anxiety. A feeling of being overwhelmed that follows you from the moment you wake up. A persistent flatness that drains the colour from things you used to enjoy.

You’ve probably been trying to handle it yourself for a while now. Most people do. You’ve told yourself to pull it together, to be more positive, to just get on with it. And for a while, maybe that worked. But now, that effort is exhausting. The strategies that once helped now feel hollow, and the idea of keeping this up indefinitely is just too much.

### What if I don't know where to start?

This is one of the biggest hurdles people face. The thought of sitting in a room (or on a video call) with a stranger and trying to explain the tangled knot of feelings inside you can be daunting. What if you can’t find the right words? What if it all comes out wrong? What if you just cry?

Please let me reassure you: there is no ‘right’ way to begin. Your first session isn’t a test. It’s simply a conversation. Our job as therapists is to help you find the words, to ask gentle questions, and to create a space where it’s okay for things to be messy and uncertain. You don’t need a perfectly prepared speech. You just need to show up as you are.

We often see people who say, “I don’t even know what the problem is, I just know I don’t feel right.” That’s a perfectly valid starting point. Therapy is often the process of finding clarity together.

### Practical tools, not just talking

While talking is a huge part of therapy, it’s not the only part. One of the most effective approaches we use is [Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/what-is-cbt). It sounds technical, but the idea behind it is incredibly practical and straightforward.

CBT helps us look at the connections between your thoughts, your feelings, and your actions. For instance, you might have a recurring thought like, “I’m going to make a mistake at work and everyone will think I’m useless.” That thought triggers feelings of anxiety and dread. That anxiety might then cause you to avoid certain tasks or over-prepare to the point of exhaustion.

With [CBT therapy in Kent](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/cbt-therapy-counselling-kent), we don’t just talk about the anxiety; we gently unpick that pattern. We might question that initial thought. Is it 100% true? What’s a more balanced perspective? We then work on developing practical strategies for when that thought pops up. It’s about building a toolkit for managing your mind, rather than being managed by it. If you're curious about the specifics, we've written before about [what CBT counselling actually looks like in Kent](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/what-cbt-counselling).

### Is this really ‘bad enough’ for counselling?

This is a question that stops so many people from seeking support. You might look at your life and think, “I have a roof over my head, I have a job… other people have it so much worse.” You minimise your own struggle, telling yourself you should just be grateful and get on with it.

But mental health isn't a competition. There’s no threshold of suffering you have to cross before you ‘qualify’ for support. If you’re struggling, you’re struggling. If stress is impacting your sleep, if anxiety is making you withdraw, if your mood is consistently low, then that is more than enough reason to seek help. It's about [moving beyond just coping](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/more-than-just-the-kent-blahs-how-cbt-tackles-specific-anxiety-not-just-stress).

Often, seeking support earlier prevents things from escalating. Many people come to us when they are just starting to recognise the [signs you’re burnt out](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/beyond-burnout-the-hidden-signs-of-stress), and we can help them find their footing before they hit a crisis point. Getting [anxiety support in Kent](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/help-for-anxiety) isn’t about admitting defeat; it’s about taking proactive control of your wellbeing.

### Making therapy work for you in Kent

Taking that first step should be as straightforward as possible. That’s why we offer counselling across Kent, with options that fit into real life.

We have comfortable, private rooms for face-to-face therapy in West Malling and other locations across the county. For many, meeting in person provides a dedicated time and space away from home to focus entirely on themselves. It can be a powerful ritual.

At the same time, we know that life is busy. Getting to an appointment isn’t always easy. That’s why we also offer [online counselling via Zoom](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/beyond-the-oast-houses-why-online-therapy-is-a-lifeline-for-rural-kent). This gives you the flexibility to have your session from your own home, cutting out travel time and making support more accessible than ever. People often ask if online counselling is as good as meeting in person, and the answer for most is a resounding yes; the connection is just as strong.

Whichever you choose, the structure is the same. We work on a session-by-session basis, with no pressure for a long-term commitment. Our fee is £68 for a full hour session. It gives you the control to decide what works for you.

Reaching out is often the hardest part. It’s the moment you decide that just getting by isn’t good enough anymore and that you deserve to feel better. If you are thinking about therapy, we are here to answer any questions you might have.

You can book an initial session directly through our website or give us a call for a confidential chat. It’s a simple step, but it could be the one that helps you find your way back to feeling like yourself again.
