# When Panic Takes Over

August 6, 2026

![A man crouches in a dark, rainy alleyway, his hands covering his face in distress.](https://rxvhnvwmfwrneowddnji.supabase.co/storage/v1/render/image/public/blog-images/panic-takes-43xdmq.png?width=1200&resize=contain&quality=80)

## When Panic Takes Over

It can happen anywhere. In the supermarket queue, during a meeting at work, or even when you’re just trying to relax. One moment you’re fine, the next your heart is hammering against your ribs. Your breath catches in your throat, the room feels like it’s shrinking, and a wave of pure, absolute terror washes over you.

You might feel dizzy, shaky, or disconnected from reality. A voice in your head screams that you’re dying, having a heart attack, or losing your mind. These are the classic hallmarks of a panic attack, and if you’ve been through it, you’ll know the description barely does the experience justice.

Afterwards, the fear doesn’t just disappear. It lingers. You start to worry about it happening again. You might begin to avoid places or situations where the last attack struck. Soon, your world can start to feel smaller, dictated by the fear of the next one. It’s exhausting.

### Understanding the Panic Cycle

What I've noticed when working with clients is that the fear of the panic attack itself often becomes the biggest problem. It creates a cycle: you feel a slight change in your body (a faster heartbeat, for example), you interpret it as the start of a panic attack, which triggers more fear, which in turn creates more intense physical symptoms. And so it spirals.

This is where [Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/what-is-cbt) for panic attacks becomes so effective. It’s not about simply talking about your feelings; it's a practical approach that gives you the tools to understand and interrupt this cycle. It helps you see how your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations are all connected.

Sometimes, this feeling of [anxiety can become so physical](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/anxiety-counselling-kent) it feels as though it lives in your body, not just your mind. We look at how to untangle that, to understand the signals your body is sending without jumping to the worst-case conclusion.

### How Therapy Can Help You Regain Control

Finding effective [panic attack therapy in Kent](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/anxiety-therapist-near-me) is about finding a way to get your life back, not just surviving the day. In our sessions, we start by mapping out what happens for you before, during, and after an attack. There are no judgements, just a calm, structured look at the pattern.

We then begin to gently challenge the catastrophic thoughts that fuel the panic. For instance, the thought “my heart is racing, I’m having a heart attack” can be examined. We look at the evidence. What else could it be? Anxiety. We teach you how to recognise the thought, pause, and reframe it based on what you know about panic symptoms.

This isn’t about pretending you’re not scared. It’s about learning to see the fear for what it is – a powerful but temporary rush of adrenaline that will pass. You learn that you can handle it. This process helps you move past that frozen feeling when anxiety leaves you stuck.

### Practical Steps Forward

A big part of counselling for anxiety in Kent involves building your own personal toolkit for managing panic attacks. This might include specific breathing techniques to calm your nervous system, or grounding exercises to bring your focus back to the present moment when you feel yourself spiralling.

The goal is to build your confidence, step-by-step, so that the fear of panic no longer controls your decisions. You begin to trust yourself and your ability to cope. You learn that when your own mind feels like the hardest place to be, you have strategies to find calm within it.

Our approach is collaborative. We work together to figure out what’s right for you. If you’re unsure, our guide on whether CBT is right for you might provide some clarity.

### Getting Support in Kent

You don’t have to keep struggling with this alone. We offer specialist support for panic attacks and anxiety from our locations across Kent, as well as online. We work on a session-by-session basis, so there’s no pressure or long-term commitment. Our fee is £68 for a full hour session.

If you're ready to stop letting the fear of panic dictate your life, please get in touch. We can arrange an initial session to discuss what you’re experiencing and explain how we can help you move forward.
