# When the Past Won’t Stay in the Past

September 15, 2026

![Ornate grandfather clock within a lush, ivy-covered stone archway opening to a misty path.](https://rxvhnvwmfwrneowddnji.supabase.co/storage/v1/render/image/public/blog-images/healing-from-past-experiences-yqng3a.png?width=1200&resize=contain&quality=80)

You check your emails and see one from your manager. A jolt of pure panic shoots through you. Your heart hammers, your stomach flips. You open it, and it’s just a simple question about a meeting. The relief is huge, but it leaves you feeling shaky and a bit foolish. Why such a huge reaction to such a small thing?

Or perhaps it’s a constant, low-level [hum of anxiety](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/dealing-with-anxiety) you carry around. A feeling of being on-guard, waiting for something to go wrong, even when life is objectively okay. People might tell you that you seem to have it all together, but underneath, it feels like you're just about holding on. This is something we see a lot; that feeling where on the surface, When Everything Looks Fine But Nothing Feels Right.

These aren't random glitches in your emotional wiring. From what I’ve seen working with clients across Kent, these are often the echoes of past difficult experiences. They are the emotional residue left behind by events that overwhelmed our ability to cope at the time.

### It’s Not Always What You’d Think

When we hear the word ‘trauma’, our minds often jump to big, dramatic events. A serious accident, a major loss, a life-threatening situation. And while those are certainly traumatic, the definition is much broader than that.

Sometimes, it’s the quieter, more prolonged experiences that leave the deepest marks:

- Growing up in a home where your feelings were consistently dismissed.
- A highly critical parent or a difficult sibling relationship.
- Being bullied at school in a way that chipped away at your confidence.
- A relationship that slowly eroded your sense of self-worth.
- A period of intense work pressure that left you feeling completely depleted.

These experiences teach our nervous system that the world isn’t a safe place. Our brain, in its brilliant attempt to protect us, learns to be on high alert. It creates a blueprint for survival: “Don’t trust anyone completely,” “Always expect criticism,” “Never let your guard down.”

### The Everyday Impact of an Old Story

The problem is, the brain keeps using this old, outdated blueprint long after the original threat is gone. It doesn’t realise you’re not in that old classroom or that difficult relationship anymore. So, it triggers the alarm bells – anxiety, panic, dread – in response to things that aren't actually dangerous.

This can show up in so many ways. I’ve had clients describe it as:

**A sense of being stuck:** You have goals and ambitions, but you feel paralysed, unable to take the steps to move forward. It’s a common reason people start looking for help, and it’s a feeling we’ve explored before when talking about Finding the Right Therapy in Sittingbourne and other Kent towns.

**Relationship struggles:** You might find it hard to trust a new partner, pushing them away to avoid being hurt, or you might find yourself repeating the same unhealthy patterns you swore you’d leave behind.

**Constant anxiety and overthinking:** Replaying conversations, worrying about what others think, and catastrophising about the future. It’s mentally and physically exhausting.

**Physical symptoms:** The body holds on to this stress. It can manifest as chronic tension, headaches, digestive issues, or a profound exhaustion that goes way beyond simply being tired. It can look a lot like the [signs of being completely burnt out](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/signs-you-are-burnt-out).

### How Can Counselling Help You Move Forward?

When you’re living with these echoes, the idea of talking about the past can feel daunting. I want to be really clear: the goal of trauma counselling isn’t to force you to relive painful memories. It’s about gently and safely making sense of them.

This is where specialised approaches like [CBT for trauma](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/what-is-cbt) in Kent can be incredibly effective. We work together to understand the connection between what happened back then and what you’re feeling right now.

We look at the survival patterns your brain developed and assess which ones are no longer serving you. For instance, the hyper-vigilance that kept you safe as a child might now be the very thing causing your daily anxiety. By recognising this, we can begin to teach your brain that it’s safe to relax the guard.

Therapy provides a space to:

- **Understand the 'why':** Finally make sense of your reactions and realise you aren't 'broken' or 'going mad'. Your responses are logical, learned survival strategies.
- **Process stored emotions:** Give a voice to the fear, anger or grief that may have been buried for years, releasing their hold on you in a controlled, supported way.
- **Develop new strategies:** Using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), we can build practical tools to challenge anxious thoughts, manage overwhelming feelings, and change reactive behaviours.
- **Rebuild your sense of safety:** We work to calm your nervous system, helping you feel more present and grounded in your own body and in your life today.

### Taking the First Step in Kent

Healing from past experiences is a process of gently untangling the knots that have held you back. It's about learning that the past can be a part of your story without being the thing that dictates your present and future.

Finding the right person to guide you is key. It's important to look [Beyond the Search Bar](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/how-to-find-cbt-therapist-kent): Finding the Right CBT Therapist in Kent means looking for someone you feel you can build a trusting connection with.

We offer sessions both face-to-face across Kent and online, which many people find just as effective and more convenient. Our fee is £68 for a full hour session. Importantly, we work on a session-by-session basis, so you are always in control and there’s no pressure for a long-term commitment.

If you recognise yourself in these words – the sudden panic, the constant [hum of anxiety](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/anxiety-and-depression), the feeling of being stuck – please know that things can change. You don't have to keep carrying the weight of the past alone.

When you’re ready, we’re here to help. You can get in touch to book your first session and start the process of feeling more at ease, more present, and more like yourself again.
