## That Frozen Feeling: When Anxiety Leaves You Stuck

It’s not laziness, and it’s not procrastination, not really. It’s that feeling of looking at a list of perfectly manageable tasks – emails to send, calls to make, things to sort out at home – and feeling a complete and total sense of paralysis. Your mind just goes blank. Or worse, it floods with a loud, buzzing static that drowns out all productive thought.

Instead of starting, you find yourself staring into space. You might make a coffee, check your phone for the tenth time, or suddenly decide to tidy a drawer that hasn't been touched in years. Anything to avoid the thing you ‘should’ be doing. And all the while, a critical voice in your head gets louder, asking why you can’t just get on with it.

This experience of being frozen by anxiety is incredibly common. It’s a defence mechanism gone wrong. Your brain perceives the mountain of tasks as a threat and, instead of activating a ‘fight or flight’ response, it chooses ‘freeze’. It’s a primitive instinct kicking in, but in modern life, it just leaves you feeling stuck and powerless.

### What's Happening When Your Brain Hits 'Pause'?

When you feel overwhelmed, your thinking often becomes very black-and-white. Thoughts tend to be absolute and catastrophic. “I’ll never get all this done.” “If I start, I’ll do it badly.” “Everyone else is coping, what’s wrong with me?” This is something we see a lot in our practice in Kent.

These thoughts aren’t just passing worries; they trigger a genuine emotional and physical response. Your chest might feel tight, your breathing shallow. You feel a powerful urge to retreat because the perceived task feels genuinely insurmountable. It’s a vicious cycle: the overwhelming thought creates the feeling of anxiety, which leads to the behaviour of avoidance, which then gives you more reason to feel anxious about the tasks piling up.

It’s a pattern that can make your own mind feel like the hardest place to be. You’re caught between the pressure to act and an internal force that makes it feel impossible. This is where a practical, structured approach like [Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/what-is-cbt) can be so effective.

### Untangling the Knot: A Practical Look at CBT

CBT isn’t about endlessly analysing your past. It’s a very practical and present-focused type of therapy. It works by giving you the tools to understand and change the unhelpful cycles of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that keep you stuck. It’s less about asking ‘why’ you feel this way and more about ‘what’ you can do about it, right now.

Think of that feeling of overwhelm as a huge, tangled ball of yarn. Trying to sort it all out at once is impossible; you don’t even know where to begin. CBT helps you find one single, loose end and gently start to pull.

#### It Starts with a Thought

The core of [CBT for anxiety](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/what-is-cbt-for-anxiety) is recognising that our feelings and actions are heavily influenced by our thoughts. The situation itself (e.g., a full inbox) is neutral. It’s our interpretation of it (“This is a disaster, I can’t handle it”) that creates the feeling of being overwhelmed.

In therapy, we’d work together to catch those automatic negative thoughts. We’d learn to press pause and look at them with a bit of curiosity. Is it 100% true that you can’t handle it? Is there a different, more balanced way to see this situation? This isn’t about forced positivity, but about finding a more realistic perspective.

#### From Overwhelmed to One Small Step

Once you start to challenge the thoughts, you can change the behaviour. CBT is brilliant at breaking down overwhelming goals into tiny, manageable steps. That feeling of being so overwhelmed you don’t know where to start can be gently dismantled.

Instead of ‘sort out my finances’, the first step might be ‘find one bank statement’. Instead of ‘reply to all my emails’, it might be ‘delete the junk mail first’ or ‘answer the easiest email’. These tiny actions break the paralysis. They provide a little bit of momentum and prove to your anxious brain that movement is possible.

### But What If I Can't Even Start?

I know. Sometimes the advice to 'just do it' feels impossible and almost insulting when you're in that frozen state. The mental barrier can feel like a physical wall. This is often where [the pressure to be perfect](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/unspoken-pressure-to-be-perfect) comes into play; the fear of not doing it right is so great that it feels safer not to do it at all.

A CBT approach acknowledges this. It doesn’t demand you climb the wall; it helps you find a small crack to get started. We might use a technique like the ‘five-minute rule’. You don’t commit to finishing the task, just to starting it for five minutes. Anyone can do five minutes. What often happens is that overcoming the initial inertia is the hardest part.

Working with a therapist provides the structure and support to put these ideas into practice consistently. It’s one thing to read about these techniques, but it’s another to apply them when your anxiety is high. Sometimes, you just need someone in your corner, helping you find that first loose thread.
