# When Anxiety Lives in Your Body, Not Just Your Mind

August 2, 2026

![Person by wooden fence, looking at cliffs, lighthouse, and choppy sea under cloudy sky.](https://rxvhnvwmfwrneowddnji.supabase.co/storage/v1/render/image/public/blog-images/anxiety-lives-body-not-just-mind-mm4qre.png?width=1200&resize=contain&quality=80)

That familiar, tight knot in your stomach before a big meeting. The way your heart sometimes races for no apparent reason while you’re just standing in a queue. You might have even been to the GP, only to be told that all the tests came back clear, leaving you with a frustrating sense of confusion.

It’s a strange and isolating place to be. Your body is telling you something is wrong, yet medically, everything seems fine. This is often the point where people start to worry there's something seriously amiss, which, in a cruel twist, only makes the physical feelings worse.

What if these symptoms aren't random? What if they are the [physical voice of anxiety](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/when-anxiety-shows-up-in-your-body)?

### Your Body’s In-Built Alarm System

Our bodies are hardwired with an incredible 'fight or flight' response. It’s an ancient survival mechanism designed to protect us from danger by flooding us with adrenaline, making our heart beat faster, tensing our muscles, and redirecting blood to where it’s needed most.

This system is brilliant when you need to jump out of the way of a car. It’s less helpful when it’s being triggered by a looming deadline, a difficult conversation, or just the accumulated stress of daily life. Your body can’t tell the difference between a real threat and a perceived one. For it, stress is stress.

When this alarm is triggered repeatedly, you start to live with the background hum of these physical anxiety symptoms. Things like:

- A constantly churning or acidic stomach
- Tense shoulders and recurring headaches
- A feeling of breathlessness or a tight chest
- Dizziness or feeling light-headed
- Unexplained aches and pains

It can feel utterly exhausting, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and not know where to start in tackling it. You just know you don’t feel right.

### How CBT Helps You Turn Down the Alarm

This is where [Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/what-is-cbt) can be so effective. It’s not about ignoring the physical feelings or just 'thinking positively'. It’s a practical approach to understanding and changing the patterns that keep the alarm system on high alert.

With [CBT for anxiety](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/cbt-for-anxiety-practical-tools-that-help-cbt-counselling-kent), we help you become a detective of your own experience. We look at the links between a situation, the thought that pops into your head, the emotion it sparks, and the physical sensation that follows. Often, we're so caught up in the physical feeling that we don't even notice the thought that triggered it.

For instance, your phone buzzes with a message from your boss. The automatic thought might be, 'Oh no, what have I done wrong?'. This triggers a flash of fear, and almost instantly, you feel that familiar knot in your stomach. The cycle happens so fast it feels like the stomach knot came from nowhere.

CBT gives you the tools to slow this process down. It helps you catch the thought, question it, and see it for what it is – just a thought, not a fact. When your own mind feels like the hardest place to be, this can provide a huge sense of relief.

### Practical Steps, Not Vague Advice

A [CBT therapist in Kent](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/anxiety-therapist-near-me) can guide you through proven techniques to manage these physical symptoms. We might explore how the unspoken pressure to be perfect is contributing to your background stress levels, or look at why certain tasks feel impossible when you're in a state of high alert.

We work with you to find what works for you. This could involve simple breathing techniques to calm your nervous system in the moment, or exercises to gently challenge the catastrophic thoughts that fuel the physical response. It’s about building a toolkit of practical skills.

The goal isn’t to eliminate anxiety entirely – it’s a normal human emotion. The goal is to stop it from being in the driver's seat. It's about getting to a place where you can notice a physical symptom without it spiralling into panic. You learn to tell your body, 'I hear you, but we are safe'.

### Is CBT Right For You?

If you're living in Kent and tired of being ruled by unexplained physical symptoms, therapy could be a positive next step. Many people wonder, 'Is CBT right for me? A guide for people in Kent might be helpful here'. In essence, if you're looking for a structured, practical approach that gives you real-world strategies, it’s worth considering.

We provide [CBT therapy Kent-wide](https://cbtandcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/private-counselling-kent), with sessions available both face-to-face and via online CBT therapy, so you can access support in a way that suits you. We work on a session-by-session basis, putting you in control. There's no long-term commitment required.

Our fee is £68 for a full hour session. It's an investment in understanding yourself better and finding a way to feel more at ease in your own skin.

If you recognise yourself in these words and want to explore how we can help, please get in touch. You don't have to keep trying to figure this out by yourself.
